Cell line: | LLC-PK1 |
DSMZ no.: | ACC 637 |
Species: | porcine (pig) (Sus scrofa) |
Cell type: | kidney |
Origin: | established in 1958 from the normal kidney of a juvenile male Hampshire pig (Sus scrofa); cells were described in the literature to exhibit properties characteristic of kidney proximal tubular epithelium |
Reference(s): | 14599, 14622, 14845 |
Biosafety level: | 1 |
Risk assessment: | The cell line carries Porcine type-C oncovirus (PCOV) sequences and their transcripts, which were detected by PCR and RT-PCR, respectively. We did not determine the infection mode of these viruses and cannot exclude the secretion of the viruses. In Germany, these viruses are classified BSL 1 regarding men and BSL 2 relating to animals (TRBA 462). However, the German Central Committee on Biological Safety (ZKBS) classified these viruses and infected cell lines BSL 2 when they are used for genetically modifying applications (Ref. 6790-10-65). |
