Origin: | derivative of HELA, established in 2021 by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated modification of the CMP-sialic acid transporter-encoding gene SLC35A1 resulting in decreased/absent levels of the protein. The cells are described to harbour a functional knockout of the SLC35A1 gene leading to increased susceptibility to transduction with adeno-associated virus 9. The cells are therefore suited for AAV9 transduction potency assays |

Risk assessment: | The parental cell line HELA is infected with papilloma virus type 18 (HPV-18). The cells contain several copies as proviruses integrated into the eukaryotic genome. The integrated virus genomes are incomplete and exhibit 2-3 kb deletions of the E2-L2 region. An activation and transmission of the HPV-18 during handling of the cell line is improbable. The cells are classified biosafety level 1 and the genetic modification renders the cell line level S1 according to German genetic engineering act. |
