established in 1982 from the bone marrow of a 4-year-old boy with Burkitt lymphoma in relapse; cells are EBV-positive and were described to carry a t(2;8) translocation leading to MYC-IgK fusion; a matched B-lymphoblastoid cell line is available (IARC-549, DSMZ ACC 927)
The cell line is positive for EBV (HHV-4) by PCR analysis. Additionally, expression of immediate-early protein BZLF-1 was also positive by western blot analysis in phorbol ester / sodium butyrate stimulated cells. The infection was classified as potentially lytic associated with a production of active viruses. A transmission of EBV during handling of the cells cannot be excluded and the cell line is therefore classified biosafety level 2.
